Quick Reference: Upload Speed Requirements

Stream Quality Bitrate Minimum Upload Speed Recommended Upload Speed
Talk Radio / Podcasts 64 kbps 0.5 Mbps 1 Mbps
Music Radio (Standard) 128 kbps 1 Mbps 2 Mbps
Music Radio (High Quality) 192 kbps 1.5 Mbps 3 Mbps
Studio Quality Audio 320 kbps 2.5 Mbps 5 Mbps
HD Video (720p @ 30fps) 2500 kbps 4 Mbps 6 Mbps
Full HD Video (1080p @ 30fps) 4500 kbps 7 Mbps 10 Mbps

Note: These are for streaming to ONE listener. Multiply by your expected listener count or use a streaming server with CDN (like Shoutcast Net) that handles unlimited listeners.

Self-Hosting vs Cloud Server: Upload Speed Impact

❌ Self-Hosting (Your Computer)
  • Your upload speed matters! Each listener consumes your bandwidth
  • 10 listeners at 128 kbps = 1.28 Mbps upload needed
  • 100 listeners at 128 kbps = 12.8 Mbps upload (most home internet can't handle this)
  • Connection drops if you exceed upload capacity
✅ Cloud Streaming Server
  • Upload speed doesn't matter! You only upload once to the server
  • 1,000 listeners at 128 kbps = Still only 128 kbps from you
  • Server's CDN handles all listener connections
  • Reliable even with slow home internet (2 Mbps works)
Recommendation: Use a professional streaming server like Shoutcast Net. Your upload speed only needs to handle your stream bitrate (128-320 kbps), not all your listeners combined.
